She earned her MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business. In the final part of this three-part series, Sandi discusses her path from MBA to CEO, highlighting the aspects of her MBA experience that have proven the most valuable to her as an entrepreneur. (Click here to read Part 1 and here to read Part 2.) Starting a company is an incredibly messy process, the details of which are often forgotten later. Within my first year as a CEO, I fired two team members for cause, changed the company name three times and made one complete pivot. I also launched two different products, taught myself to code well enough to launch a minimally viable product, participated in an intense three-month accelerator program called TechStars Seattle and raised over $1M from investors, including from fellow GSB alumni. All of this is normal in early-stage companies. I used to joke that being a CEO was the easiest thing in the worldâ€"all you had to do was quit your job. In reality, one of the hardest parts of being CEO is that I am constantly changing job functions and taking on roles in which I have had very little experience, from fundraising to coding to sales. If there is one thing I have learned, it is that business comes down to relationships. The Stanford GSB excels at building those relationships among students, as well as providing the tools to strengthen those networks post-graduation. What is particularly great about Stanford is its emphasis on experiential learning. Applying many of the principles learned in “Touchy Feely” (see Part 2 of this series) to the workplace, I learned much more about team dynamics, my own management style and how to have difficult conversations (e.g., firing) in such courses as “High Performance Leadership.” Another class that stands out in my mind is “Leadership Laboratories,” which places first-year students in small groups to role-play business scenarios, and culminates in various leadership challenges against GSB alumni during the Executive Challenge. What I also valued about my MBA experience was the ability to gain exposure to a lot of different topics, from sales and operations to finance, marketing and more. As CEO, I switch between these functions every single day. As my company grows (as I hope it will!), I will eventually be able to delegate some of these tasks. But much of a start-up’s success in the early days is doing more with less, and even a basic grasp of the fundamentals has put me ahead of my peers. Othello I am not what I am. An essay on Othello, question No 4. I will discuss this quote in relation to Lacan's ideas about language as the symbolic order. My aim is to show how Othello finds his identity threatened by Desdemona's reaction to his tales. In order to explain Lacan's ideas very briefly I will quote from Pam Morris: Literature and Feminism, (Blackwell, 1993) where she discusses the resolution of the Oedipal crisis. For Freud the outcome of the child's fear of castration is its submission to the reality principle and hence its entry into the social order. For Lacan this must coincide with the child's entry into the language system.....Language is thus the Law of the father; a linguistic system within which our social and gender identity is always already structured. (p. 104) Othello's identity in the Venetian society is his role as the Moor. Few people use his real name when talking about him. When speaking the given quote, Othello is telling the Venetians how he won Desdemona's heart by telling her the story of his life, and he now retells it to the Venetians. This tale-telling is a way of employing the linguistic system to reshape for himself a new identity with more positive connotations than the Moor can offer. The Moor is an expression the Venetians connect to other expressions in the linguistic system which all have a negative value. Examples are such expressions as old black ram, a Barbary horse, lascivious, and a devil. The negative overtone of these words will reflect back on Othello. He can't change his origins but he can try to change the connotations of the Moor. He can fill the expression with a new content and thereby give himself an identity he can be more comfortable with. This is what Othello is doing when he is retelling his history. Othello is obviously a good narrator; Desdemona can't get enough of his story. Expressions like seriously incline, with haste and greedy ear show Desdemona's eagerness for his storytelling. And ever..../She'ld come again shows that this has been happening over a period of time without Desdemona growing tired of his tales. The given quote implies that Othello feels he has been too clever for his own benefit. Desdemona's craving for his autobiography is felt as a threat; it may jeopardize his new identity. Othello says that she would: Devour up my discourse. It is in this discourse that his identity exists. If she devours up his discourse, she devours up his identity and leaves him where he started; as the Moor. Desdemona may represent the all-engulfing mother of the pre-Oedipal stage. This is a stage without structure, language or identity, an opposite to the linguistic system, the Law of the father. It is with a greedy ear she devours up my discourse. An ear is sometimes used to symbolize female genitalia and will here emphasize the fact that Othello feels the threat to be feminine. That he, through his discourse, is devoured shows that this feminine threat is all-engulfing. If Othello refuses to accept his old role as the Moor he will either be without an identity or be dragged by his self-fashioned identity back into the pre-Oedipal stage. These options are two sides of the same coin, he will lose himself either way. To give up one's self is the same as suicide. Both death and the pre-Oedipal stage are spheres without language, structure, intention or identity. To give way to the one or the other will have the same result for Othello; he will no longer be a conscious being. To save himself, Othello must get control over this greedy ear. Female sexuality was considered something scary which could best be controlled through marriage. A loose tongue was a sign of loose sexuality. Othello extends this notion to include Desdemona's greedy ear. He marries Desdemona and all is well until Iago implies that Desdemona is unfaithful. Unfaithfulness in a woman will reflect back on her husband. A cuckold is a ridiculous figure in other people's eyes. He must be seriously lacking in person for his wife to run after other men. Othello sees himself in the same situation as before the marriage. Instead of using her ears she is now using her sexuality to destroy the identity he has built up for himself. I

The character Ophelia in William Shakespeare’s play Hamlet plays a very interesting and important role in the elaboration of the plot. In the beginning, she starts off in a healthy state of mind, in love with her boyfriend Hamlet, yet controlled by her father in regard to their relationship. During the play she encounters several troubling experiences involving Hamlet which cause her to become distressed. Near the end, the death of her father leaves Ophelia mentally unstable and in a state of madness that eventually leads her to death. Ophelia’s and Hamlet’s love for each other in the beginning was very real. Following the death of his father Hamlet falls in love with her, and is much attracted by her beauty. It is not uncertain, however, that Ophelia is very much controlled by her father. She is the daughter of Polonius, the chief advisor to the new King Claudius, and a highly respected man. Her father demands that she tell Hamlet at once that she can no longer be with him and tells her "I would not, in plain terms, from this time forth have you so slander any moment leisure as to give words or talk with the Lord Hamlet. Look to’t, I charge you. Come your ways." (I.iii.132-35). It is clear that here Polonius is making decisions for his daughter, regardless if she really loves Hamlet or not. She feels very unimportant and helpless now, and because of this develops a lack of emotional confidence and strength. All she can reply is "I do not, my lord, what I should thi nk." (I.iii.104). She is used to relying on her father’s direction and has been brought up to be very obedient. As well, her brother Laertes agrees with what their father is saying. He also tells Ophelia that Hamlet is no good for her "Perhaps he loves you not" (I.iii.16). He thinks that Hamlet only loves her because he wants to seduce her, and demands his sister to never see him again. Ophelia can only accept her father and brother’s beliefs and writes Hamlet a letter which informs him that she can no longer see him.
